Hi, I'm a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I help children, adolescents, and adults improve their mental health.
Do you wonder if you worry too much? How do you know when your worry has become a problem? Is it normal for people to have panic attacks? Anxiety can be a very healthy response to environmental stressors, but some people have difficulty controlling their anxiety. Here are four ways to tell if your anxiety is clinically significant.
Your feel anxious all the time
It is normal to feel anxious from time to time. You may have significant anxiety if you worry all the time. In psychiatry, we classify this by saying you worry more days than not. This anxiety may be from normal stressors, but sometimes you can feel anxious without a cause.
Your have been anxious for a long time
A person with significant anxiety will be anxious for as long “as lost as I can remember.” They will report that they have always been a worrier. It is not common for someone to develop significant anxiety without an identifiable trigger.
Your have lost control of anxiety
Most people are able to rationalize with their anxiety to help calm themselves. Someone with significant anxiety will lose the ability to control their anxiety. It is common for a person with significant anxiety to ruminate on their worries. This may build to the point where they have a panic attack, also known as an anxiety attack.
Your anxiety affects your daily life
When people typically feel anxiety, they can still complete their day to day activities. A person with significant anxiety will not be able to complete day to day activities because they feel so anxious. For example, someone will be so anxious that they struggle to do their job at work.
